Developing countries are known to have poor sanitation facilities. It is not dignified to be using fields and unsecure locations for relieving oneself. However, it is common in developing countries to relieve oneself in such locations. This of course brings many difficulties and dangers, some of which have been highlighted in the media especially for women. Furthermore, with poor facilities people are more prone to illnesses which at times become life threatening. Furthermore, another issue that is of concern is the one of menstrual health of women in developing countries. Many women face the embarrassing situation of using rags on a regular basis. Despite being a natural process it is a taboo topic in many countries and societies. This renders it impossible to discuss openly hence the difficulty in trying to provide safe hygiene facilities and materials. It is estimated that 500 million women globally have no access to menstrual products and appropriate facilities for menstrual hygiene management.
